Have you ever had a dessert that’s so good you thought you could make a meal out of it?I had that thought after tasting the Old Fashioned Vanilla Ice Cream at Kilwin’s. It was the best ice cream I have ever put in my mouth. It was so thick that it stuck to the spoon, truly making me savor every bite. “The product is so superior to anything else on the market, which is why we chose it,” said Marc Berkowitz.  He and his wife Yvonne, are owners of the Kilwin’s Panama City Beach Restaurants location, which opened on Valentine’s Day.  But the Berkowitzs first fell in love with Kilwin’s at a friend’s shoppe in Fort Lauderdale. Kilwin’s is a chain of confectionery shoppes.

The first shoppe opened in Michigan in 1947, and now there are about 70 shoppes nationwide.  Kilwin’s owns the original recipes, so I wasn’t able to get all the secrets to why the ice cream is so creamy and rich. “Its just premium higher butter fat,” said Berkowitz.  Some things, such as calories, probably better left a mystery. “Ice Cream is definitely our no. 1 seller and fudge after that,” he said.  “My favorite thing in the store is my peanut brittle.” I thought the rocky road fudge was the creamiest, but the peanut butter fudge really won me over. “Most people have not seen the way we make fudge before,” said Berkowitz.  “We make it on a marble table.” Being the day before Easter, I had to buy milk chocolate and dark chocolate bunnies.  I showed a little restraint by not getting the white chocolate too. “Everything is done in milk, dark and white chocolate,” said Berkowitz. “Kilwin’s is more about the enjoyment of the experience — and the smell,” said Berkowitz. He said waffle cones make the strongest scent, but passers-by also can smell when they make caramel and fudge.  I had smelled the waffle cones from outside the store, and all it took was one whiff to draw me in. It didn’t matter that I hadn’t been hungry.

We came to Panama City Beach during spring break with our children, we stayed 7 days and it was wonderful. Toward the end of our stay we found Kilwin’s, it was like heaven. The very best ice cream I have ever tasted, it’s the real deal. The kids really liked sitting at the bar by the kitchen and watched them make all of their delicious fudge and other products, if you sit there you are sure to get fresh samples right off the table. Also the staff was the nicest of just about anywhere I have ever been. I only wish we would have found it sooner. Oh well, next year! “Great Chocolate/Ice Cream!”

Peoria Jun 5, 2009 We stopped by Kilwin’s twice while vacationing in Panama City. Both times we bought fudge which was excellent. The store is located in the Pier Park and is hard to pass by without going in and buying something. They have great fudge, chocolates, and ice cream. The kids liked watching the fudge being made. Kilwin’s is a great place to stop for dessert, late evening snack, or just to get your chocolate fix. Quotes courtesy of Trip Advisor
