There’s no explanation for what just happened to me so I’m not even going to try. I’ll just tell you that I drank some last night (as writers do)  and found myself in town this morning with no will whatsoever to fight the dropsies that had attached to me overnight. Giving in, I drove aimlessly hoping to spot a quiet place to have a morning beer.

Please note: I am writing this under duress. I don’t want to tell you what I’m about to tell you, so I’m asking right now that if you have something else to do, go do it and forget about this. Please.

I’m a relative newcomer to Panama City with limited contacts so if I have ever been told of this particular place I don’t remember. There are those who will read this and wonder at my ignorance for having not been aware of it before. It’s only been there on Massalina Bayou for 30 years.  As a restaurant. As a…place, it’s been there a lot longer. And by place I mean dock. It’s a dock on Massalina Bayou. The restaurant is. On a dock. On Massalina Bayou.

So I wander through this portal entrance and teeter down the dock, looking at the boats in their slips. At the end of this dock I took a seat by the water, the open sliding doors letting the morning breeze work on keeping my senses about me with a piling the only thing keeping me from taking a spill into the deep.

A 30A Beach Blonde Ale was perfect. (http://30a.com/30a-beach-blonde-ale/) The menu was surprising and I noticed they were open for breakfast at 7am. Breakfast and a brew.

The epitome of the Salt Life.

I ordered my catfish, grits, and sunny-side-ups and marveled at the view, wondering what I had done for my muse to lead me to this place.

There were only four other people there at 9:30 on this Wednesday morning (Wait. Thursday. I think) and miracle of miracles there was no piped in Jimmy Buffett for “atmosphere.”  There was no music. Just the beautiful ambient sounds of life around…on…water.

I was grateful. Hangover grateful.

I made a pledge to myself to come back for dinner next week. If I don’t give myself a deadline I’m usually screwed. But I didn’t really need a deadline to remember to come back here. It’s just a habit. I do need to remember they are open until 9pm most nights I think. I don’t know. Check the website.

So get this…writing is tedious. I’m sure you remember from high school. On a good day it flows easily for those daft enough to call themselves writers. On bad days, which are most of them, it is torture.

On those good days, when you are handed something to write about that has moved you…fed your senses and surprised you to the point that you you realize you had actually given up on being surprised…that you comprehend again what the word “delight” means…those are the days you are grateful for.

Those places that bring about those days…yes. Even more grateful.

So…

I had another beer and a couple hours later I left.

So that’s it. Nothing special, so don’t worry about going there and telling other people about it. They’ll only come and then tell other people and they’ll come and before long…you know.

Oh. The place is called Bayou Joe’s.

Anybody can make a pizza. Only a few can make good pizza. Then there are those that make it the Way it Was. Great White Pizza in Pier Park on the west end of Panama City Beach is just that.  If you want good pizza then call the delivery guy and get your pizza. If you want pizza that makes taste buds dance, that transports you back to the Old World of Italy, Great White Pizza is the place.

Pizza isn’t thought to be anything but a quick, cheap way to feed the family and not have to dirty the kitchen on Saturday night. But true, original, real pizza as it originated on the coast of Naples is rightly called a delicacy. Great White Pizza captures that Old World taste in the New World 21st century. If pizza had a filet mignon, you would find it in that little corner of Pier Park.

The selection of gourmet pizzas is broad enough to satisfy any palate, but they are not just a random selection of kitchen-sink ingredients. Each pie is blended in such a way as to maximize the entire dining experience. All of the 18 gourmet pizzas presents a unique combination of flavors made from fresh ingredients, placed on fresh dough made daily, and seared in the namesake red-brick oven making the crust delicately thin but crisp. And delicious.

The pies are Old World baked, but have a New World appeal. The Margherita is a flavorful blend of four cheeses: mozzarella, provolone, white cheddar, and Parmesan, with basil, garlic, and fresh tomatoes and a red sauce. The combination of cheeses isn’t what you’d expect from your everyday pizza experience. It is a wonder. The others are no less delectable and yet present a completely different dining experience. The Greek pizza has ham, red onions, kalamata olives, pepperoncinis, mozzarella and feta cheeses with an EVOO garlic sauce.

If you want the true Old World experience, try they Pizza Rustica, an exquisite combination of ham, pepperoni, mushrooms, mozzarella, Parmesan, fresh basil, and spices with an EVOO garlic sauce baked on a perfectly thin & crisp Artisan Crust. For the ultimate Great White Pizza you have to sample the Great White Pizza Gourmet Works. A perfect blend of pepperoni, ham, bacon, Italian-style sausage, mushrooms, black olives, red onions, bell peppers, and mozzarella with a red sauce.

All of this is more than a pizza lover could ever expect, but is only part of what Great White Pizza offers. There are the five different, equally tasty salads served with heart healthy fire-roasted croutons & trans fat free house dressings. If that weren’t enough, you can finish your meal in an equally delectable way with their Italian Gelato, their trademarked Bhrazani (a triple chocolate fire-roasted gourmet brownie, topped with gelato & chocolate drizzle).

There is a children’s menu if you want to bring the bambini, and the adults can enjoy a selection of red and white wines along with specially selected handcrafted microbrews. To end the evening you can enjoy your choice of Espresso, Latte, Cappuccino or a Cafe Americano.

It’s okay to have pizza, but when you are ready for pizza as it was meant to be, Great White Pizza has it for you.
